Just south of Crewe and over the border into Staffordshire, Betley is a beautiful village. It's in the Domesday Book, got a royal charter for a weekly market in the 13th century, and Charles Darwin, Florence Nightingale and Elizabeth Gaskell all stayed at Betley Hall or Betley Court. The medieval church is worth a look too.
From the Swan there are three loops to choose from, 3, 5 or 8 miles, out over the fields and lanes and back to the pub.
