The meres and mosses dotted across south Cheshire and north Shropshire were left by the last Ice Age. As the glaciers retreated about 10,000 years ago they left hollows that filled with meltwater. Deep ones became meres; shallow ones became mosses, or peat bogs.

Fenn's, Whixall and Bettisfield Mosses is the third largest raised bog in Britain and a national nature reserve. With 95 per cent of our raised bogs gone, it's a precious place for rare plants, insects and birds.

It's flat, open and eerie in the best way.
