Close to the Welsh border, between Wrexham and Oswestry, Colemere and Ellesmere's Mere are among the largest meres in England, left by melting glaciers.

From the car park at Colemere you go round the mere anticlockwise, then join the Llangollen Canal and follow it to Ellesmere and its mere. The return crosses the fields via Welshampton. It's 8.7 miles in all, but either mere makes a lovely shorter walk on its own.
