Dee Estuary - Burton Point, Deeside, Shotwick and Puddington | 9.5 Mile Walk / Run on the Wirral

The Dee Estuary is a lovely spot for a walk or a run with fantastic views across the estuary and today we come back through the beautiful villages of Shotwick, Puddington and Burton too. The route is about 9.5 miles. Starting from Denhall we head out to Burton Point where there is an Iron Age Promontory and where before it silted up ships used to moor up, now the area is all salt marshes, much of the land is owned by the RSPB and has lots of wildlife. From there we reach the MOD Sealand Firing Range and so the path moves away from the edge of the salt marshes and beside the railway down to Deeside. When we reach Deeside we do a loop around the industrial estate and then back on ourselves to Shotwick with its lovely Sandstone Church. In fact Shotwick was a port back in the 1400’s before the river silted up and pushed the port up to Burton and then to Neston and Parkgate. The rest of our return trip takes us across the fields to the village of Puddington and then on to Burton before dropping back down to our starting point.

The Route

From the starting point follow the path to Burton Point and on to Weighbridge road at Deeside. Turn left and then take the marked cycle track on your right under the Welsh Road and into Deeside Industrial Estate.

Follow the marked path which turns right through the estate and then on a track which goes around the edge of the estate. Eventually you will return to the Welsh Road slightly further down, ahead a footbridge goes to Chester but we turn left alongside the main road and then left into the industrial estate and right on Drome Road. Just before the roundabout turn left and take the underpass under the Welsh Road then follow the path straight on which comes out in Shotwick.

Pass the church and up the road and take the next left. Follow the road which becomes and track and finally a track. The path goes across the fields and comes out at Puddington.

Go straight on to the end of the road then turn left into Puddington Lane. Take a left into Earles Way and follow the footpath which eventually come out further down Puddington lane. Turn left and follow the road to the end at Burton Village. Turn left and through the village then turn left into Station road which takes you back to the starting point.
