What a week.. With storm Christoph followed by flooding and then all of a sudden blue sky and snow. Today we’re heading out of Sandbach on the back lanes to Hollins Green then taking the path over fields and the railway tracks to the Middlewich Road and picking up the canal and then heading back via Moston and Ettiley Heath, I’ve included 2 route maps depending which path you take from Hollins Green, the first is 6.5 miles the second is 7.7 miles.
Starting at the Cobbles in Sandbach we head down down Penda way past the market hall and onto Green Street and through to Malt Kiln Way. We then head down Bradwall road turning onto Cooksmere lane at the junction with Sweettooth lane , you just follow this all the way to Hollins Green (it becomes Wood Lane further down).
Having arrived at Hollins Green you have two route options, I turned left and took the path over the fields which brings you out at the new housing development on the Middlewich Road (Albion Lock) however I noticed a sign I’ve not seen before right at the end of the path saying path closed (it wasn’t) and so if you prefer you can take the other footpath from Hollins Green, instead of turning left off Wood Lane were I did, follow it to the end and turn left, take the footpath on the left after about half a mile which also takes you across the tracks and brings you to the Middlewich Road slightly further down (I’ve included both route maps).
Now join the canal and head back towards Sandbach getting off at the bridge at the start of Warmingham lane. Head down Warmingham lane and turn left into Oakwood lane, at the end turn left into Plant lane and immediately right into Moss lane and then take a right into Moston Road, left into Elton Crossing, right into Station Road and left into Deans Lane. At the end of Deans lane turn left into Abbey road and right onto Middlewich Road. At the town centre take Old Middlewich Road through to High Town and then Head down the High Street back to the Cobbles.
Free long stay car park located near Waitrose
Or park in the long stay car park on Chapel street.
If you'd just like to take a stroll down the rail trail without the rest of the route, I'd suggest parking on the side of the road near the end of Lodge road in Sandbach near Miola.
