The Sandstone Trail Part 3 - Bickerton to Whitchurch
Visit Cheshire for a 3 day Middle Distance Walking Holiday

Today we’re going to explore the Sandstone Trail in Cheshire, it’s one of the oldest and most popular middle distance walks in the Northwest of England.

Established in the 1970s, the route has been extended at both ends reaching its current length in the late 1990s its 34-35 miles and heads south from Frodsham to Whitchurch following the Sandstone ridge.

I ran the whole route in 1 day which with a small diversion to the Delamere forest visitors centre and doing the optional Old Pale ascent came to 34.8 miles. It is possible to walk the whole route when the days are at there longest however I’d recommend splitting it up into a 3 day route and taking your time to enjoy the views and surrounding areas.

The route is well marked with regular finger posts however I would advise having either the ViewRanger or Ordinance Survey app on your phone as these will show you where the path is and where you are in relation to it and what direction you are pointing just incase you miss a marker or are unclear where the path exits a large field.

So today we have part 3 – Bickerton to Whitchurch

The Sandstone Trail Part 1 - Frodsham to Willington | Visit Cheshire for a 3 day Middle Distance Walking Holiday

Exploring the Sandstone Trail in Cheshire, it’s one of the oldest and most popular middle distance walks in the Northwest of England.

I ran the full 34.8 miles in a day and I’ve split it into 3 videos. In the first one I set out from Frodsham and run the first third of the Sandstone Trail through to Willington

The Route

We Begin our route today at Goldford Lane in Bickerton. Turn right up the Sandstone trail marked path which climbs Bickerton Hill for a stunning view. The path dips then rises again at Larkton Hill again with gorgeous views and then drops down into Hether Wood following the edge of the woodland and then dropping you down onto the rolling grassland of the Cheshire Plain. The path takes you past Larkton Hall then crosses Long lane and down past Manor House Farm Stables to Shay Lane. At the lane turn right and then take the path on the left to Hampton Green. Cross the road and over the fields. Note the marker was slightly confusing at the far side of the field that was ploughed in the video, you cross the field through the gate and turn right. Follow the path through to Bickleywood. At the road turn right and left into Flag lane then take the path on the left into Bickley Hall Farm. Follow the path over the fields to the next farm which was awash with sheep today, head through the farmyard then turn left. Head over the fields to Willeymoor lane where you go right then immediately left and over the last couple of fields to Willeymoor Lock on the Llangollen canal. Turn right towards Whitchurch. You pass through Grindley Brook, past the staircase locks. Almost there now, lookout for the road bridge we go under, shortly after this cross a bridge to the end of the canal at Chemistry then take the path which crosses the road and comes out at the car park at our finishing point at Sherrymill Hill Car Park.
