This is a great route for exploring Delamere Forest at a little over 6.5 miles its about a 2.5 hour walk.
Starting from Nettleford Woods you climb to the top of Old Pale for the stunning panoramic views before descending to the main Delamere Forest visitors car park near Delamere Station. The route takes you through the forest past the Gruffalo, around Blakemere before crossing over the switchback road for a loop of the far side of the forest and returning via Eddisbury on the Sandstone Trail and back to Nettleford Woods.
Note the car parks at the Yeld, Gresty’s Waste and Barnsbridge are open between dawn and sunset so if you are planning to catch a sunrise or sunset you would need to park on the road outside or preferably at one of the other locations where you can park 24 hours a day.
The route is based on parking at the free car park on Yeld Lane in Kelsall, head down Forest Gate Lane opposite the car park and into Nettleford Woods, follow this path straight on up to the top of Old Pale.
Alternatively park at Stoney Lane, Delamere near the bend in the road by the footpath, there is space for several cars to pull up on the verge. Take the footpath to your left that follows the course of the old roman road into Nettleford woods, turn right on the main path and then right again for Sandstone Trail alternative route which takes you up Old Pale.
Alternatively park in the free car park at Gresty's Waste. Cross the road and head into Nettleford woods on the Sandstone trail. Turn right again for Sandstone Trail alternative route which takes you up Old Pale.
Alternatively park in the free car park at Primrose Wood. Head down the track then take a left marked for the Sandstone Trail which will bring you to Gresty's Waste. Cross the road and head into Nettleford woods on the Sandstone trail. Turn right again for Sandstone Trail alternative route which takes you up Old Pale. Note parking here adds approximately 1.5 miles to the route.
Alternatively park in the free car park at Barnsbridge on the switchback road and begin the route between miles 4-5 of the mapped route.
