Today we are near Leek in Staffordshire at Cheddleton. We’ve been here before, last time we ran down to Consall, today we are heading in the other direction down the Caldon Canal to Deep Hayes Country park and then looping back over the fields to Shaffalong Lane / Brund Lane and back into Cheddleton via Ostlers Lane and the Basford Bridge Path. Lovely spot for a walk or a run and with a couple of pubs to choose from for refreshments and of course the option of a trip on a steam train from Cheddleton Station.
Starting from Cheddleton Station turn left into Basford Bridge Lane and cross the river Churnet. Now turn right onto the tow path of the Caldon Canal. You have the canal on your left and the river Churnet on your right, beautiful. Follow the canal until you reach a more modern concrete bridge at park lane. Exit the canal and turn left , then immediately right into Deep Hayes Country Park. Follow the track to the toilets just before the main car park and turn left on the path that heads south down the eastern side of the park. Follow the path marked Brund lane which heads out of the country park. At the field go straight on over the field then continue on the footpath to the left of the farm. At the fourth stile just beyond the barn the path turns left. Cross the next stile and turn immediately right along the edge of the field heading for the barn. At the farm track turn left to Shaffalong Lane. Turn right then left on the footpath over the fields to Brund Lane. Turn left and take the next path on your left over the fields to Ostlers Lane. At the lane turn left and just before the church turn right down Ox Pasture. At the bend in the road, take the path on your left. Follow the path until you reach some cottages and turn right on the path by the cottages which comes out on Cheadle Road. Turn left down the hill to the Red Lion then turn right on the Basford Bridge Path. Where the path forks in the woods take the left hand path which comes out directly opposite the Boat Inn on Basford Bridge Lane.
