Eccleston - 1.5, 3.5 or 4 mile walk / run along the River Dee and through the woods near Chester

Eccleston is a beautiful village just south of Chester in Cheshire, unspoilt with original sandstone buildings. Adjacent to the Grosvenor estate owned by the Duke of Westminster and next to the river Dee as it flows north towards Chester from Wales you really couldn’t ask for a prettier spot for a walk or a run. The route is perfect for dog walkers as long as you don’t mind a damp dog 🐶 in the car on the way home as they won’t be able to resist a splash in the river.

The Route

Starting from The Eccleston Ferry car park (free) turn left onto the river footpath towards Chester.

For the shortest route (1.5 miles ish) turn left just before the A55 bridge. Through Diamond Jubilee Wood to Eaton road, turn left and back through Eccleston.

For the 4 mile route continue under the A55 at the third gate just before the tree turn left up the bank and over the field to Eaton road and turn right. When you reach the large White House on your right (you can’t miss it it’s huge), cross the road and take the path left into the woods back towards Eccleston. When the path meets another path at a T turn left and follow the path until it comes out on Eaton road at Eccleston. Turn right crossing the A55. On your left is the Diamond Jubilee Wood path*, turn left and follow it to the river, turn right back to the start at Eccleston Ferry.

For the 3.5 mile route when you reach the Diamond Jubilee Wood path* continue straight on past the school into the village. Turn left at the end of the road and bear right around the corner into Paddock road and then left down the hill to the starting point.
