Daresbury is a lovely old village of sandstone buildings with a great pub, the Ring O' Bells. You can spot it from miles away by the Daresbury Laboratory tower, built here because the sandstone bedrock keeps delicate instruments steady.
Lewis Carroll was born here, and All Saints Church has an Alice in Wonderland window. The route heads out along the Bridgewater Canal to Halton, where the ruins of the castle sit on a hill above Runcorn with views over the Mersey.
