If you’re heading south to Cornwall and fancy a break that’s a bit more soul-soothing than a crowded motorway service station, let me introduce you to Buckfast Abbey.
Just two minutes off the A38 Devon Expressway, nestled in a quiet valley beside the River Dart and Dartmoor National Park, Buckfast Abbey is a hidden gem of calm. It’s free to enter and park, and offers a warm welcome to all travellers—with beautiful gardens, a café, restaurant, clean toilets, and even a gift shop where you can pick up a bottle of the legendary ‘Bucky’.
This isn’t just a tourist stop—it’s a living Benedictine monastery, first founded in 1018 and lovingly restored by exiled French monks between 1882 and 1938. As you wander the abbey and gardens, you can feel the serenity and deep history of the place. It’s the perfect spot to breathe, reflect, and recharge before the next leg of your journey.
📽️ I’ve just released a special video all about our visit to Buckfast Abbey—but it’s currently available exclusively for members over on Patreon and YouTube Memberships. In it, I take you through the grounds, share the story of the abbey’s past, and show you why this place is well worth the small detour.
If you’re a supporter, thank you—you can watch the full video now.
