Beautiful spot. Starting from Ridge Quarry we head down the ridge enjoying stunning views of Manchester.
Next we drop down through the woods to the Peak Forest Canal and on to Strines road and the River Goyt at Roman Bridge. It’s not Roman, it’s a pack horse bridge dating from about 1700 which presumably allowed access to Mellor Mill.
We follow the Cown Edge way for a while before heading back down into the valley to Roman Lakes. Built in the 18th century, these manmade lakes helped power Mellor Mill. After it was destroyed by fire, the lakes became popular as a Victorian Pleasure Park.
Next we head under the rail viaduct which is quite something, it’s on the Manchester – Sheffield line. We pause by the sluices that used to feed the Roman Lakes from the river Goyt before heading back to Roman Bridge and heading back up the hill to the starting point.
The route I did was just under 4 miles, though I’ve suggested an alternative slightly longer route too.
