Hoylake to Birkenhead Park - Running the North Wirral Coast | New Brighton & Views of Liverpool

Today we are back to the Wirral Peninsula to explore the North Wirral Coast. Starting from Hoylake we follow the coast to Leasowe Common where you’ll see the oldest brick built lighthouse in Great Britain dating back to 1763. We then head on New Brighton, known pre 19th century for smuggling and wrecking we head up to Perch Rock with views of the fort and lighthouse and then head down New Brighton Parade and on to Egremont Ferry with fantastic views across to Liverpool and the Liver Building. We continue down to Seacombe Ferry which is currently closed for refurbishment but normally would let you hop on a boat over into Liverpool. From here we head into Birkenhead heading for Birkenhead Park where we can pick up a bus or train back to Hoylake. The route measures 10.8 miles, is well surfaced throughout and has some absolutely stunning views.

The Route

Starting from Meols Parade, head through Parade Garden to the front and turn right. Follow the path all the way to Leasowe Common. Here I stepped off the embankment for a minute for a closer look at the lighthouse before rejoining at the car park. Continue to the breakwater at Mockbeggar Wharf then head across the beach and back up onto the embankment on the far side. Follow this all the way into New Brighton. At Perch Rock we reach the end of the peninsula and turn the corner, follow New Brighton Parade all the way to Seacombe Ferry then at the road turn left on A554 Birkenhead road and follow it over the red swing bridge into Birkenhead. Cross onto the right hand side of the road here (with care) and at the roundabout continue straight on on the A554 Tower Road. Then at the next roundabout at Tower Quays  Go straight on and follow the road around to the right onto Rendel Street A5029. Follow the road to Conway Street and turn right, the park is ahead on your left. Head into the park to the middle then turn right and out by the visitors centre and turn right, the bus stop is about 100 yards down the road or turn left out of the park then right into Duke Street to the train station, both offer a regular service back to Hoylake.
