The Wrekin - 7 Mile Run including Ercall Wood & Limekiln Wood

Today we are Shropshire just outside the market town of Wellington at Telford for a run up the Wrekin. Wow, what a view from the top; along the way we run through Ercall Wood and Limekiln wood which feel ancient, it’s like I’m in Fangorn from Lord of the rings. The clue is in the name ‘Limekiln Woods’, there were lime kilns here dating back to at least the 11th century fed from the carboniferous limestone from the nearby Wenlock Edge.

The Route

Starting from the free car park on Ercall lane we run down the edge of Ercall Wood beside the M54. Follow the path which heads through the woods, crosses a road and then heads over the golf course and into Limekiln Woods. The path skirts the edge of the wood follow it along a steady incline. When the path forks, take the right hand fork and continue following the path which eventually crosses another lane and finally comes out at a field with great views of the Wrekin to your right. Follow the path over the field to the road and turn right. Half the way down the dip, take the path on your left along the edge of Wenlock’s Wood you reach another lane cross it and over the stile then turn left up the field. At the far side of the field you reach the path around the Wrekin where we turn left. Follow the path around the left hand side of the Wrekin, when you meet a main track on your right take it and then take the steep path on the right that climbs up onto the Wrekin itself. Head across the top and enjoy the view from the trig point then drop down the far side which appears to be the main route people take up and down. At the bottom of the hill turn right and then left into Ercall lane and follow it back to the car park at the starting point.
