We’re back for another chunk of coastal adventure today running a section that I’ve missed on the Wirral between Parkgate and Thurstaston. I have run this section before but I haven’t filmed it and last time I did it I just ran down the Wirral Way and I have to say running along the shoreline was much more of an adventure with some stunning views. Having completed this section it means we’ve now run all the paths continuously from Aberdaron to Birkenhead. In todays instalment we start from the front at Parkgate heading past the Boathouse where you might like to grab a drink after your walk or run. The current building opened as the Boathouse Cafe in 1926 but stands on the site of an older 17th century inn. Also there was a ferry here that ran at high tide over to Flint on the other side of the Dee Estuary. Then we head through the old baths car park, which is another good place to park and start your route, it stands on the site of an old outdoor baths which opened in the 1920s and closed in the 1950s, alas all that remains is a bit of the retaining wall. We then follow along the edge to Cottage Lane and head onto the Wirral Way for a short section before heading down Riverbank road at Gayton and running along the shore at Heswall and on to Thurstaston beach where we head back through Wirral Country Park and back via the Wirral Way. The total route was 8.75 miles.
