We’re back in North Shropshire this week, I enjoyed the run to Ellesmere so much I’ve come back to explore a bit more. Starting from St Martin’s (once home to the Ifton Colliery) we head down the Llangollen canal to Chirk, heading over the Chirk Aqueduct and through Chirk Tunnel before heading through Chirk and back via the river Ceiriog and Ifton Meadow. I hope it inspires you to give it a visit
Head down Green Lane to the end by St Martin’s Parish Church and turn right on Church Lane. Immediately after the Castlefields turn take the left hand track to the fields. Head over the fields to the Canal and turn right. Follow the canal to Chirk and head through the tunnel. Take the path right away from the canal and left passing Chirk Station then straight on down Station Avenue into Chirk. At the end of the road turn right into Church Street and then left into Trevor road by St Mary’s Church. After passing Brynkinalt take the right hand turn into Shepherd’s Lane. At the end of the road turn right into Colliery road. Head around the left hand bend and take the road on the right over the A5 and head down the hill. Take the path on your right over the field and down into the valley to the bridge over the river Ceirog. Turn right then take the path left immediately after the bridge. The path heads over field and then over a metal bridge over a stream and then bears left up into the woods. Continue up hill then turn right when you meet another path. This comes down to a house and lane. Head down the lane and then take the path left up through the woods then left around the edge of Ifton Meadows. At the far side turn left and cross the fields to the road and turn right. Head down the road passing a pull in for Ifton Meadows. Turn left on Glyn Morlas Lane and follow it to the end then right onto Colliery road and follow it back into St Martin’s. At the end of the road turn right into Overton Road back to our starting point.
I parked on the road at Green Lane
Alternatively there is a car park for the supermarket immediately opposite the start at the memorial gardens. There are no signs up about parking restrictions so I guess you could park there.
