Exploring Little Budworth on a Snowy Day: Winter Walk/Run Cheshire

You’re going to love this one, Little Budworth is a beautiful village and it was a perfect day with blue sky and snow. We start from Little Budworth Country Park, a common just outside the village which has a free carpark. It’s a site of special scientific interest being probably the best surviving area of lowland heath in Cheshire.

People have been living here for a long time, the Romans past through when they were exploring the resources in Delamere Forest and a Viking called Bodeur set up a settlement here. Today we have a street of beautiful old house, proper picture postcard Cheshire. The church St Peters dates back to 1190, the original sandstone tower and north wall remain thought the rest was rebuilt in 1798 and lets not forget the Red Lion pub opposite the church which you might like to visit. From here we head on running down the edge of Budworth Pool and across the fields to pick up the track. There are loads of paths and restricted byways around here, perfect for walking or running. We head through to the northern end of the country park via Whitehall Lane pass through it and out the other side and then do a lap of Oulton Park Race Track (sort of anyway) we run on the lane and over the fields beside its outer brick wall, there are places where you can see over the wall and catch a glimpse of the track at Knickerbrook for instance. Finally we head through the edge of the estate back to our starting point. Loved it, highly recommend a visit.

The Route

Starting from the car park turn left into Coach Road then left into Park Road which becomes Vicarage Lane and head through the village passing the church now head left on Mill Lane to Budworth Pool and take the path left over the fields. At the track turn left and follow it to Park Road where we turn right and immediately left. Take the next path on the left, at the driveway turn right and then at then end turn left on Whitehall Lane. Follow the track, you head down into a hollow where the path splits, continue to the left on Whitehall Lane to the edge of the Country Park. Now follow the main path which goes left through the woods. At Coach Road cross and continue straight on until you emerge on Park Road. Cross the Road and go straight on down Ruston Lane. Follow the lane around the edge of Oulton Park until you reach Kings Lane where we turn left, follow the track and then take the footpath on the left which follows the wall on the edge of Oulton Park. The path eventually heads away from the wall, at the next gate ignore the path right and continue on to the track that goes through the edge of the Oulton Park Estate. Follow this back to Park Road and cross and head through the woods to the car park.
