Alderley Edge to Hare Hill in Cheshire's Golden Triangle

Today on Run Adventurer, we’re in Cheshire’s ‘Golden Triangle’ at Alderley Edge. A pretty village surrounded by stunning Cheshire countryside but close to Manchester, its a popular place for the more wealthy people in Cheshire to live including premiership footballers, cast members for shows like Coronation Street and even a couple of band members of New Order I’m led to believe.

We are going to head up onto the Sandstone ridge and follow it out to Hare Hill and back. The scenery very much reminded me of places along the Sandstone Trail at Frodsham and Rawhead for instance. Some stunning views and interesting history, the edge is like a Swiss cheese, full of holes from the Copper mining that has been going on here since the Bronze Age with the Romans in particular exploiting the local resources.

At the far end of the ridge is Hare Hill with its National Trust Gardens, those of you who are walking might like to pay a visit as part of your walk.

The Route

From either the free car park on Rileys lane or the train station, head up onto the Main Street (London Road) and turn right. Take the turn on the left into Macclesfield Road and then left into Trafford Road. At the bend turn right up a cobbled lane (Woodbrook road) and follow it up the hill just before the end of the road take the path on the left into the woods and up onto the Edge. Follow the path past Castle Rock and up to the viewing point then continue straight on. We’re taking the path past the grand looking house thats currently being redeveloped, just beyond the house take the path left and follow it until you come out on Macclesfield Road. Turn left and then left again into Prestbury road. At the junction turn left and continue down Prestbury road, there is a path on your left for a stretch that takes you off the road on a narrow section. Follow the road to the entrance for Hare Hill. Those of you visiting the gardens head up the drive and then after your visit take the path on your left at the top of the hill. I’m headed past Hare Hill as it was all locked up and then around to the left on Chelford Road and left into Oak Road. Follow the lane and then take the path on your left over the field down to the woods which joins up with the path from Hare Hill. Head into the woods and follow the oath back up onto Alderley Edge, just keep following it. You drop down into a dip and cross and damp bit, at this point the fingerpost suggests you turn left, instead go right and follow the path up the hill to Hough Level Copper Mine. Turn right and then take the next path left then zig zag right, left back to the look out point. Go straight on, using the path we came in on but then after a short distance turn right and follow it down hill and left passing Wizard’s Well. Continue straight on back past Castle Rock the turn right and follow the path dow to Mottram Road. Turn right and them left into Moss lane, right into Talbot Road, left into Stamford Road, right into Trafford Road, left into Hayes Lane back to London Road back at our starting point.
