Runcorn Hill Park - A Walk with views across the River Mersey

Today on Run Adventurer we’re in Runcorn in Cheshire. There are beautiful place for a walk all around us and if you haven’t checked this one out yet, you really should. Its not a long walk, 1.5-2 miles depending which way you go but the views are amazing. It’s the site of an old sandstone quarry, the sandstone quarried here ended up in Chester and Liverpool and even down to the docks and sent abroad for example it was sent to America and was used in the construction of the docks in New York. The sandstone was laid down about 200 million years ago and many fossils have been found including the footprints of precursors to the dinosaurs.

The Walk

From the car park take the path beside the reservoir tank. Be sure to take the detour left up onto Beacon Hill to enjoy the view from the top of the sandstone ridge

now continue to follow the path down below the sandstone quarry and follow it at its base.

At the far end pause to look at the cave and all the names and symbols carved into the soft sandstone over the years

Follow the path which climbs up out of this valley. At the top turn right and enjoy the view out across the river Mersey towards Hale and Liverpool and on the other side out towards Ellesmere Port

Turn around and retrace your steps back to where we climbed out of the valley then continue straight on. Follow the path right down again and join a main path turning right until you reach the old mining cart. This marks an old drum line where the sandstone was transported down the hill to the docks. Take the path left and up to enjoy the view once again. There’s a bench here, take a seat and watch the planes taking off from Liverpool airport.

Now follow the path along the edge through the scrub, follow it all the way to the far side of the park and then left to the dog friendly cafe. Then follow the path towards the tennis courts and up to the car park just beyond.
