Wybunbury Pub Walk - 1.5, 3.5 & 5 Mile Walk / Run Old Cheshire Village

Today we are in Wybunbury (pronounced Win-Bree). It’s a lovely old Cheshire village located between Crewe and Nantwich and one of the oldest settlements in Cheshire dated back to well before 1066. A must see is what remains of St. Chads Church, the Church tower. Dating back to the 15th Century there is a real feel of history to the place and the ancient gravestones used as paving are worth stopping and looking at and imagining what Wybunbury must have been like way back then. Todays route is actually two loops the first is a loop around Wybunbury Moss. The Mosses of Cheshire are the damp ground left over from the last ice age and being no use for farming or housing feel old and are a great habitat for nature. We’ve visited other mosses before, I’ll include some links below. The second loop takes us over the fields over rolling farm land to pick up the South Cheshire Way and then back via the Hough Mill Quarry path. Whichever route you take, I’d suggest visiting the Swan Inn or the Red Lion for a well earned drink afterwards, both have beer gardens and if you’d like to make this a mini break, both have accommodation.

The Route

Starting from the Main Street near the Swan Inn, head into the grounds of St. Chads church tower.

Loop 1 – Wybunbury Moss (1.5 miles)

Take the path left down the bank to the Moss and head over the board walk and through the gate. Take the path to the left and follow it around to the left around the edge of the moss until you reach Moss Lane. Turn left and after a few hundred yards continue onto the track on your left. Follow the path which will eventually take you back up the bank, then turn left and follow the path until you find yourself back at the church yard. Turn right into the church yard.

Loop 2 – Wybunbury (3.5 miles)

Now turn left and take the other path from the far side of the church tower to a track. Turn left then immediately right and head over the fields coming out by a farm. Turn right down the track towards the road then turn left on the path over the field. At the corner of this field we join the South Cheshire Way, turn right, cross the road and go straight on. At the field follow the field to the left and then strike out straight across the field just to the left of the water hole. At the track cross and head straight on down the path. At the bottom turn right at the stile then take the path on the left up to Wrinehill road. Turn left then immediately right on the South Cheshire way. Follow the path which runs over the fields and the meets another track, turn left down to Lea Forge Farm and take the track on your right which runs alongside Hough Mill Quarry and comes out close to Wybunbury on Wrinehill Road. Turn left back to your starting point near the church tower.
